In recent times, a section of Nigerians have been clamouring for the creation of state police in the country, while some are of the opinion it will help curb the rate of crime in the society, others are of the opinion it will be hijacked by state governors.

The discussion weather or not to have a state police in Nigeria has even received a mention in the national assembly where opinion was sharply divided among members. The iss, has equally drawn concerns from Nigerians in the diaspora.
Francis Onabis, a Nigerian politician based in Italy in a recent statement made available to the media in Abuja says “Nigeria is not ripe enough to have state police”, according to him, “at the moment, we have only federal police, see how the political elites use them, just imagine when governors are now allowed to be in charge of police in their various states”.

Onabis, says instead of creating state police, president Bola Tinubu should empower the civil defence to resolve the security challenges in the country.

He said, “Tinubu should expand the scope of the civil defence in eight thousand eight hundred and six wards across the country, with each ward have an office with three personnel and a car attached to them”
He further stressed that the civil defence personnel must be made to go through routine training and also made to know all residents in their communities. They should also not favour any party or persons.
