58 illegal varsities

Published December 26, 2018

The PUNCH of Tuesday, December 18, 2018, reported that the National Universities’ Commision had closed down 58 illegal universities in Nigeria.

Ordinarily, one would have commended the NUC for a job well done, but some questions beg for answers, like, were all these 58 illegal universities established at the same time?

Obviouly, this won’t be the case. It is reasonable to ask how these universities get clients; it is, or likely to be through media adverts.

Didn’t the PRO unit of the NUC come in contact with such an advert? Because the NUC is not likely to be completely oblivious of the emergence the illegal universities, one may thefore question the body for not doing the needful until the number rose to 58.

Or, are these 58 not likely to be those that had applied for licence but began operation ahead of the approval?
