Being the Text of a Press Conference by the Network for the Advancement of Good Governance in Nigeria to Laud the Judiciary for Upholding Truth and Justice in Abia North Senatorial District
Welcome gentlemen of the fourth estate of the realm. The press is more powerful than the sword. As a pressure group, Network for the Advancement of Good Governance in Nigeria urges you to be more resolute in exposing the ills of the Nigerian State. Together with judiciary, you are the beacon of hope of the people of Nigeria and the bulwark against executive rascality, illegality and corruption. Network for the Advancement of Good Governance in Nigeria commend the recent judgment by the Presidential Elections Petition Tribunal that upheld the election of our able and dynamic leader, President Muhammadu Buhari. With this judgment, the judiciary has once again proven that it is the true defender of the rule of law and the masses.
At this juncture, it is pertinent to also hail the Abia State Petition Tribunal that nullified the election of Orji Uzor Kalu, as the senator representing Abia North in national assembly. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) attriously and unlawfully announced Orji Uzor Kalu as the winner of February 23rd ,2019 Abia North Senatorial Election with the full knowledge that election was marred with irregularities consequent on the corrupt tendencies of the returning officer, Dr. Charles Anumudu who is known acolyte and business partner of Orji Uzor Kalu.
Election in several wards in Arochukwu, Umunneochi and Isikwuato, Item, Nkporo and the strong hold polling units of the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s candidate, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa were cancelled thereby making a mockery of the entire election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should have at best ordered for a rerun election due to her non-compliance with the electoral guidelines. With the recent tribunal judgment ordering for rerun election in Abia North Senatorial District, Network for the Advancement of Good Governance in Nigeria urges the press and other relevant stakeholders to be more vigilant. We particularly appeal to the electorate in Abia North Senatorial District that was previously denied of their right to elect their true leader to protect their votes.
In the same vein, we enjoin the judiciary to expedite the trial of Orji Uzor Kalu over the allegation that he embezzled over 7.6 billion naira while he held office as the executive governor of Abia State between 1999-2007.
Thank you and Good bye
