Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, successfully thwarted attempts by Nigerian Police officers, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), to take control of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) in the early hours of Friday, October 4, 2024.
According to reports, the officers attempted to break into the RSIEC premises at around 1 am, allegedly planning to steal sensitive electoral materials designated for the upcoming local government elections set for Saturday.
Their efforts were stopped when alert security personnel raised the alarm, notifying key officials of the Commission and government authorities.
Governor Fubara quickly responded, leading a delegation of government officials, including lawmakers from both the National and State Assemblies, as well as political stakeholders, to secure the facility.
As of now, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and several other high-ranking officials are stationed at the RSIEC office to ensure that the police officers do not return and that the election proceeds as planned
