Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a midnight operation in Lokoja.
According to Vanguard, he is currently detained at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
Sources indicate that Bello, who had initially stated his intention to voluntarily respond to the EFCC’s invitation, was apprehended at his residence after being tracked by operatives.
The EFCC confirmed his arrest, countering earlier assertions from Bello’s media team.
Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, emphasized that the former governor intended to cooperate fully with the EFCC to clear his name, asserting his commitment to the rule of law.
He noted that Bello had been consistently represented by legal counsel throughout ongoing court proceedings related to the allegations.
Michael also underscored Bello’s belief in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda, highlighting that Bello was the first Kogi State governor to implement measures against corruption during his tenure. Several notable figures accompanied Bello to the EFCC headquarters.
The media office expressed optimism that the EFCC would conduct its investigations with professionalism and respect Bello’s legal rights.
Additional information regarding Bello’s interactions with EFCC operatives is anticipated in the coming days as the investigation unfolds
