December 18, 2018 OPINION
I read with utmost indignation the feeble efforts made by your regular columnist, Dele Momodu to burnish the image of my former governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, Firstly, the public relations article was totally bereft of rationality but full of emotion.
Orji Uzor Kalu is the toast of hack & opinion writers as Dele Momodu stated “ No matter the situation, my friends are always my friends. Business or politics should never separate friends Orji Uzor Kalu was already a successful businessman when I met him around 1990”.
Orji Uzor Kalu’s arraignment by the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for allegedly looting over N6.7 billion naira while in office several years ago was consequent upon petitions by stakeholders and Abia concerned citizens.
The issue of Orji Uzor Kalu being a successful businessman since 1990 is another kettle of fish, when he became the governor of Abia State in 1999, Orji Uzor Kalu a clever business alec is alleged to have engaged in anticipatory assets declaration by claiming that he was a billionaire. Dele Momodu is one of few columnists I adore but his recent adventure of defending the odious and corrupt former governor of Abia State rankles.
Orji Uzor Kalu may have been a successful Aba trader in 1990 but the question is whether he put his hands in the public till as governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007, Dele Momodu will shed tears if he takes an excursion to Camp Neya Orji Uzor’s Palatial estate in Igbere, his home town. This edifice is worth billions of naira, over grown with grasses and built with the Abia tax payers’ money.
Rather than engage in a voyage of adulation for looters, Dele Momodu should assist the present administration in fighting corruption. His pay master Orji Uzor Kalu is the grand master of corruption and most face the music. Several years ago Orji Uzor Kalu while holding sway as the governor of Abia State goaded the pliant Abia State house of assembly, to appropriating millions of naira for the purchase of state of the art printing machines for the transformation of the Abia state government owned newspaper (The Ambassador). He immediately converted it to his own use (The Sun Newspaper). Sometimes ago, the EFCC froze the account of the Sun Newspaper on account of this financial sleaze. The question that genuine Abians are asking that despite Abia State being an oil producing state is one of the least developed in Nigeria. While we commend the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for arraigning Orji Uzor Kalu for looting over N6.7 billion naira belonging to the state, we urge it not to deceive by his antics to evade justice. We also urge the authorities to be also wary of hack writers like Dele Momodu who always stand truth in the head for their selfish interest. They live in their palatial houses in London, hobnob with the corrupt elite. They are not bothered that thousands of Abians are dying every day because of the malfeasance of Orji Uzor Kalu who deprived them of basic health care facilities like hospitals, health centre etc.
