Gowon Intervened: The Untold Story Behind Abacha’s Decision To Spare Obasanjo
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has revealed that he pleaded with the late General Sani Abacha to spare former President Olusegun Obasanjo from execution after his 1995 conviction for an alleged coup plot.
Speaking at the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organized by the Plateau State Government, Gowon disclosed his efforts to save Obasanjo’s life, including sending a letter delivered by his wife to Abacha in Abuja.
“I wrote to Abacha, urging him to remember that leadership is ordained by God to do good, not harm,” Gowon said.
Obasanjo, initially sentenced to death despite his insistence on innocence, was later released in 1998 after Abacha’s death and became president in 1999.
Gowon expressed gratitude for the role of prayers and sincerity in resolving the matter and noted the significance of being able to celebrate unity with Obasanjo.
The former leader also commended the Plateau State Government for organizing the carol, emphasizing its role in fostering peace among citizens, especially after the state’s recent security challenges.
Gowon lauded Governor Caleb Mutfwang for initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and described the event as a step toward reconciliation and unity.
